Terrafame’s Sustainability Programme sets course for ambitious goals

Our subsidiary has prepared a programme which provides guidance on using side streams and waste energy, for example.

Terrafame has published its Sustainability Review which includes a Sustainability Programme for 2020–2024. The programme consists of themes that are important to us as well as our stakeholders. The themes are further divided into several goals and measures, the implementation of which will be monitored annually.

I am very pleased with the Sustainability Programme. Its themes and objectives are concrete, enabling us and our stakeholders to easily follow their realisation in the years to come. The bar for the objectives was set high, and reaching the goals will require not only a lot of work but also financial investments.

Making the most out of side streams

One of the themes of the Sustainability Programme relates to the management of industrial side streams, which is something that Terrafame’s bioleaching process enables in an extraordinary manner. Bioleaching can also be used in water management due to its evaporation capacity of water and the binding capacity of sulphate.

We are already making good use of our process side streams, and their use will only increase with the deployment of the new battery chemicals plant. In practice, this means that we can capture the side streams that contain valuable metals and send them back for another round of bioleaching, thus avoiding the generation of industrial waste. To me, this is a prime example of the circular economy. I believe that in the future Terrafame will also be able to utilise industrial side streams that have been produced elsewhere.

Towards carbon-free electricity

Terrafame's strategy is spearheaded by the responsible production of battery chemicals for the needs of electrifying transport while creating only the smallest of carbon footprints. This objective is also central to the Sustainability Programme.

In the programme, we defined goals and measures for the exploitation of process-based waste energy and the production of bioenergy. This theme relates to our desire to use 100% carbon-free electric energy in our production, which is why we are, for instance, looking into opportunities to use wind power that is produced somewhere nearby.

Nickel sulphate with a low-carbon footprint

The metallic nickel made of Terrafame's current nickel product has a carbon footprint that is about 40% smaller than the industry average. We have launched a new survey to calculate the carbon footprint of the main product of the future battery chemical plant, i.e. nickel sulphate. The report is going to be drawn up by an international specialist company in accordance with industry standards.

The preliminary results of the study, which will see its final form in the early autumn of 2020, seem encouraging, which leads me to believe that the new product will do well in the competition. I am pleased that we are able to take part in the electrification of traffic with a product that has a low-carbon footprint, and I am confident that this feature is seen as a genuine value by Terrafame’s customers as well.
