The Global Battery Alliance (GBA), which Finnish Minerals Group is a member of, has January 18th launched the first-ever Battery Passport proof-of-concept at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos.

The prototype Battery Passports include example data from Audi and Tesla relating to the battery’s technical specifications, material provenance, and reporting against key sustainability performance indicators, including the GBA’s Greenhouse Rulebook, Human Rights and Child Labour Indices. The Passport will enable customers to make more informed purchasing decisions and drive sustainable sourcing, processing and manufacturing practices in the industry.

As an actor in the mining industry, we are proud that our portfolio companies are producing or planning to produce the metals and chemicals needed for the green transition, including those used in batteries. Through our membership in the GBA, we are supporting the development of sustainable, circular, and responsible battery value chains from the mine to the recycling plant. The surge in electric vehicle ownership means that mitigating the risks across the battery value chain is more important than ever, and we are steadfastly committed to ensuring that we conduct our operations in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable way.

“As a GBA member and a participant of the working groups, we are proud to achieve this concrete milestone of proof-of-concept. GBA as an organization and the GBA members have collectively made significant efforts in the development. We are now one step closer to be able to measure, track and improve battery value chain performance with common global rules and guidelines”, states Matti Hietanen, CEO of Finnish Minerals Group.

The GBA is the world’s largest multi-stakeholder consortium to establish a sustainable battery value chain, comprising more than 130 public-private organisations.
