Production at Terrafame is highly integrated. All phases of production are carried out on the same industrial site. The company obtains the ore from its own mine and utilises bioleaching based on microbial activity to extract metals from the ore. Metals recovery is also carried out at the company’s own metals production plant. After that, the nickel and cobalt sulphides are further processed at the new battery chemicals plant into sulphates used in the production of lithium-ion batteries. By-product ammonium sulphate is used as a fertiliser or as a raw material for fertilisers.
In 2020, Terrafame regularly employed approximately 2,000 people. At the end of the year, the company directly employed 870 people. In addition to its own personnel, an average of 1,166 employees worked at the industrial site during the year through contractors and subcontractors. The number of employees was increased especially by personnel working at the battery chemicals plant construction site and the recruitments made to the new plant.
Terrafame produced 28,740 tonnes of nickel, which was a new annual record. Zinc production remained at the previous year’s level, totalling 55,100 tonnes. The company's net sales were EUR 338.3 million, EBITDA EUR 23.8 million and operating result EUR -16.9 million.
At the end of 2020, Finnish Minerals Group owned 66.8 per cent of Terrafame. We exercise the ownership power, manage state holdings and support our subsidiary's business activities through active ownership and research and development work.
