Sokli Oy, a company fully owned by Finnish Minerals Group, will have archaeological trial excavations done at the mining concession of the Sokli mining project in Savukoski during the autumn. The excavations are a continuation of previous investigations. This time, the trial excavations will take place on two sites, which have been identified as acient settlements. The trial excavations will be carried out by a team of eight from the Finnish Heritage Agency’s Archaeological Field Services, from 30 August to 17 September 2021.

The trial excavation team will dig trenches measuring one metre wide to find out whether more extensive investigations will be needed. In addition, any relics and cultural heritage sites found will be marked in the terrain with wooden pegs, and a section of the locomotive road within the mining concession used in the log hauling operations will be documented.

The archaeological sites in Sokli were discovered in 1988, 2008 and 2013. In 2019, investigations were carried out in six ancient relic sites located near pond Loitsana. The oldest of the sites investigated has been dated just after the Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago, after which there have been several settlements in the area.
