Finnish Minerals Group (FMG) has renewed its strategy. The company’s mission is to create sustainable growth from Finnish minerals while its vision is to power European energy transition and security with strategic materials. The renewed strategy will guide FMG’s operations towards 2035.

“Strategic materials have become one of the cornerstones of Europe’s competitiveness and comprehensive security. We want to ensure that Finland fully captures this opportunity. Our strategy sharpens FMG’s role as an accelerator of this development,” says CEO Matti Hietanen.

A key objective of the strategy is to advance Finland’s sustainable economic growth and strengthen industrial capabilities and security. FMG aims to enable new mining and processing investments, improve the security of supply of strategic mineral raw materials, and accelerate the transition away from fossil energy.

The company acts as a project developer and invests in mining and processing projects that help build critical value chains in Finland and Europe. In evaluating investments, it emphasises long-term significance and feasibility.

Long-term return target for the portfolio

FMG seeks profitable and growing business operations through its holdings, generating both shareholder value and economic growth. The financial targets of the strategy are a long-term total return of 10 per cent on the investment portfolio and positive cash flow.

“FMG combines industrial expertise with societal impact. We invest in projects that create significant new industrial activity in Finland. Through our investments, we enable substantially larger private capital investments in projects. This creates value for both our owner and Finnish society,” says Matti Hietanen.

Towards a climate-neutral portfolio

Responsible value creation is a cross-cutting principle of FMG’s strategy. The company aims to build a climate-neutral and nature-positive investment portfolio. Social acceptance is strengthened through transparent and responsible operations. Both sustainability and financial considerations are taken into account in portfolio management and investment decisions.

Successful implementation of the strategy requires sufficient capabilities and strong execution skills. The company is committed to fair leadership and to engaging a skilled and motivated workforce. Its operations are guided by the company’s values: cultivating with courage and care.

A multi-billion-euro opportunity in minerals

Finland has an exceptional opportunity to build new growth based on strategic minerals and their processing.

“Strategic minerals have become a key issue for Europe’s competitiveness, energy transition and comprehensive security. Finland has excellent prerequisites to become a forerunner in the sector, but the opportunity must be seized now. With the right decisions, we can unlock investments worth billions of euros and create growth for decades to come,” says Matti Hietanen.

Industry associations representing the mining, battery and metals processing sectors in Finland have jointly proposed that the government should target at least EUR 15 billion in investments in mines and critical raw materials processing during the next electoral term. FMG supports the industry proposal and sees that, in line with its strategy, it has a role as a long-term anchor investor and project developer that helps accelerate the realisation of significant investments in Finland.
